Alle Martinique Rums anzeigenMartinique is a sunny 436 square-mile Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies; the French claimed it in 1635, and it is still part of the European country’s territory. The high-quality French standards have helped the Martinique rum industry position itself as the source of the finest sugar cane spirits. This is the only rum style protected by international law with its own appellation of origin or AOP. The island’s exciting spirit is called Rhum Agricole. Unlike most other Caribbean rums, this one must be made with the purest sugar cane juice and not with the lesser molasses, a by-product of sugar production. The French-style spirit is distilled to 70% alcohol in column stills with copper condensers (much lower than most other rums) and rectified to a final 40–55% before bottling. The process makes it one of the most flavourful rums in the world. Of course, using the finest French oak barrels is not unheard of on the island, which gives Rhum Agricole an elegant old-world feel. There are fourteen distilleries in Martinique, and they produce rum from sugar cane juice in several styles. Perhaps the most coveted is the Rhum Vieux or old rum, which ages for at least three years in oak. Spirits labelled as Dark Rum or Rhum Ambré age for 18 months, and a vibrant and uncomplicated White Rum is not aged at all. The latter is best suited for craft cocktails. For French-style rum, Rhum Agricole from Martinique has no equal.
